This Inspection Scope and Limitations Schedule ("Scope Schedule") forms part of the Verifi Inspect Terms & Conditions. It describes what a Verifi Inspect inspection is, how it is carried out, and what it can and cannot identify. Please read it before confirming a Booking. Capitalised terms have the meaning given in the Terms & Conditions.
1. What a Verifi Inspect inspection is
A Verifi Inspect inspection is a visual and non-invasive assessment of a vehicle, carried out by an independent Inspector at a single point in time, in order to record the condition of the vehicle observable at that time. The inspection produces an Inspection Report setting out the Inspector's observations and any items identified as requiring attention.
2. Method
Unless a different service has been expressly purchased, the inspection is carried out:
- (a) by visual examination, physical operation of controls and accessible components, and where reasonably possible a short road test;
- (b) without removing, dismantling, disassembling or partially disassembling any component, panel, trim, cover, undertray, wheel or assembly;
- (c) without draining, sampling or laboratory testing of any fluid;
- (d) without pressure testing, compression testing, leak-down testing, dynamometer testing, borescope inspection, paint depth measurement or crack testing;
- (e) without removing wheels or tyres, and without lifting the vehicle on a hoist unless a hoist is available at the inspection location and its use is permitted;
- (f) without the use of manufacturer-specific diagnostic equipment or a full electronic diagnostic scan, unless such a scan has been expressly purchased; and
- (g) without reference to the vehicle's service history, repair history, finance status, title status or written-off vehicle register status, unless those records have been provided to Verifi Inspect or such a check has been expressly purchased.
3. What is looked at
Subject to the limitations in this Scope Schedule and to accessibility, the inspection may include observation of the vehicle's body, exterior, interior, electrical systems, engine and its accessible ancillaries, cooling system, exhaust system, braking system, fuel system, steering and suspension, safety systems, transmission, final drive, chassis, understructure, tyres and wheels, and the vehicle's performance during a road test where a road test is possible.
Not every item listed above will be observable on every vehicle. The Inspection Report will note where an item could not be assessed.
4. Limitations inherent in a visual, non-invasive inspection
The Customer acknowledges that a visual, non-invasive inspection cannot identify:
- (a) faults, wear, damage or deterioration to internal components that are not visible or accessible without dismantling, including the internal condition of the engine, cylinder head, cylinder bores, bearings, valve train, timing components enclosed by covers, turbocharger, transmission, torque converter, clutch, differential, transfer case, power steering rack, air conditioning compressor, brake calipers, wheel bearings or sealed electrical assemblies;
- (b) latent, incipient or developing faults that were not manifest at the time of inspection;
- (c) intermittent faults, or faults that only present under particular load, temperature, duration, speed, terrain or driving conditions not encountered during the inspection;
- (d) faults that are masked, temporarily suppressed, recently reset, or concealed, whether deliberately or otherwise, including by cleaning, additives, sealants, sound deadening, recent servicing, clearing of fault codes, or temporary repair;
- (e) damage, prior accident repair, structural repair, filler, corrosion, water or flood damage, or paint or panel repair that is concealed behind panels, trim, sealant, underbody coating, carpet, headlining or fitted accessories;
- (f) the condition of any area obscured at the time of inspection by dirt, mud, snow, water, ice, cargo, personal effects, aftermarket accessories, undertrays, splash guards or covers;
- (g) the state of health, remaining capacity or degradation of a hybrid or electric vehicle traction battery, unless a battery health assessment has been expressly purchased and is technically available for that vehicle;
- (h) the accuracy of the vehicle's odometer beyond recording the reading displayed;
- (i) compliance of the vehicle or any modification with any law, standard, regulation or manufacturer specification;
- (j) whether the vehicle is or has been subject to a manufacturer recall, service campaign, insurance write-off, finance encumbrance or theft; or
- (k) the presence of asbestos, mould, contamination, infestation, odour or biological matter.
5. Specific exclusions
The inspection and the Inspection Report do not extend to, and Verifi Inspect gives no opinion on:
- (a) the future condition, reliability, durability or remaining service life of the vehicle or any component, or the rate at which any observed wear will progress;
- (b) the cost, method or adequacy of repairing or rectifying any item, including any repair estimate mentioned as indicative only;
- (c) the market value, resale value, fair price or negotiating position in respect of the vehicle;
- (d) the condition of any towed trailer, caravan, load, roof or tray mounted accessory, or any item not forming part of the vehicle;
- (e) the operation of aftermarket, modified, non-standard or non-functional equipment, including audio, alarm, telematics, GPS, dash camera, lift kits, engine modification and LPG or other alternative fuel installations;
- (f) roadworthiness or defect status in any State or Territory; or
- (g) any matter arising after the time of the inspection, including any change in the condition of the vehicle, any use of the vehicle, and any damage, fault or deterioration occurring after the inspection.
6. Vehicle and access requirements
For the inspection to be carried out effectively, the Customer must ensure, or ensure that the vehicle's owner or seller ensures, that at the booked time:
- (a) the vehicle is at the nominated address and reasonably accessible;
- (b) the vehicle is reasonably clean inside and out, and the engine bay and boot are accessible and clear;
- (c) the keys are available and the Inspector is permitted to open, start and operate the vehicle;
- (d) the vehicle has sufficient fuel or charge, and a functioning battery;
- (e) where a road test is required, the vehicle is registered, insured and lawfully able to be driven on a public road, and the owner or seller consents to the road test;
- (f) the Inspector is given uninterrupted access to the vehicle for the full duration of the inspection; and
- (g) where applicable, service records, logbooks and any prior inspection or repair documentation are made available.
Where these requirements are not met, the inspection may be limited, curtailed, rescheduled or cancelled, and the Inspection Report will note any part of the inspection that could not be completed. Verifi Inspect is not liable for an omission from an Inspection Report caused by the requirements in this section 6 not being met.
7. Road test
Where a road test is carried out, it is a short test over a limited distance in mixed conditions where available. A road test cannot replicate all driving conditions and cannot identify a fault that does not present during the test. A road test may be omitted where the vehicle is unregistered, uninsured, unsafe or immobile, where consent is not given, or where road, traffic or weather conditions make it unsafe or impracticable.
8. How to read the Inspection Report
(a) The Inspection Report records observations, not conclusions about the whole vehicle. The absence of a comment about an item does not mean that item is free of fault, only that no fault was observed within the scope and method of the inspection.
(b) Where an item is described as not assessed, not accessible, not tested or unable to be verified, no observation has been made about it and no assurance is given about it.
(c) Photographs and videos are illustrative of specific observations. They are not a complete visual record of the vehicle and may not show every part or defect.
(d) Any severity rating, category, score or summary in the Inspection Report is the Inspector's opinion at the time of inspection, based on visual observation, and is not a measurement.
9. Point in time
The Inspection Report relates only to the condition of the vehicle at the date, time and location of the inspection. It says nothing about the condition of the vehicle at any other time. The Customer acknowledges that a vehicle's condition can change, and faults can arise or become apparent, at any time after the inspection, including immediately after it.
10. Reliance
The Inspection Report is prepared for the Customer only and is subject to section 12.9 of the Terms & Conditions.
11. Independent advice
The Customer acknowledges that an inspection of this kind is one input into a purchase decision and does not replace the Customer's own inquiries. Where a vehicle is high value, specialised, modified, imported, competition prepared, or where the Inspection Report identifies an item requiring further investigation, the Customer should obtain a specialist or invasive examination before proceeding.
